There are many different ways to build an ash hopper but they all have the same idea, straining or leaching water through the ashes. Think of the ashes as tea leaves, in order to make a liquid from the tea leaves you must steep or soak them in water.
I used the barrel method, substituting 5 gallon buckets for barrels. You’ll need one bucket to turn into your barrel and another to collect the runoff. For a few extra dollars I added a spigot to an old laundry soap bucket.
